United States Attorney David Weiss and the late Beau Biden worked together in relation to various legal cases while the late Biden served as Delaware’s Attorney General.
Connections between Weiss and the Biden family are being brought to light as the special counsel continues his investigation into Hunter Biden and as Republicans claim the president’s son received lenient treatment during the investigation that led to a plea deal.
A new Washington Post report details how the late Beau Biden, serving as Delaware Attorney General, had frequent communication about legal cases with Weiss as acting U.S. attorney in Delaware.
“We are always working hand-in-glove with federal government; there’s nothing unusual about that,” Tim Mullaney Sr., Beau Biden’s chief of staff at the state attorney general’s office, told the Washington Post.
Mullaney pointed to Delaware’s close-knit community as a reason Weiss and Beau Biden may have run into each other, stating he doesn’t believe they had a relationship outside of their work connections.
“Everybody knows everybody in Delaware, and it wasn’t unusual to see [Joe Biden] at the bookstore, the ice cream shop. It is normal,” Mullaney said.
Weiss also previously investigated illegal campaign contributions made to Joe Biden’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Beau Biden recused himself from the investigation into the campaign donations to his father’s campaign, which resulted in Delaware businessman Christopher Tigani being sentenced in 2012, according to the Washington Post.
In a pre-sentencing memo quoted in the report, Weiss described Tigani as the “embodiment of the ‘Delaware Way,’ a concept described uniformly by the defendant and others as a form of soft corruption, intersecting business, and political interests, which has existed in this State for years.”
Weiss was nominated as a U.S. attorney in 2017 by former President Donald Trump, who questioned Weiss regarding his elevated role in Hunter Biden’s probe, saying on Truth Social that the federal prosecutor “would not have been picked by me.”
Now, special counsel Weiss is at the center of a five-year investigation into Biden’s other son, Hunter Biden. The president’s son reached a plea agreement earlier this year, where Hunter Biden would plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors, striking a deal with federal attorneys to resolve a felony gun charge. However, the deal collapsed in court last month when the gun charge diversion agreement was questioned by a judge.
Attorneys for Hunter Biden pushed last week that their deal with federal prosecutors to resolve a felony gun charge is “valid and binding,” despite Weiss’s office writing days before the court filing that their legal teams were “at an impasse” regarding a plea.
A federal judge in Delaware dismissed the two tax charges against the president’s son on Thursday, but more charges in another jurisdiction could be filed in the future.
