Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is seeking to have his state charges moved to federal court, arguing that his actions were part of his official duties as chief of staff.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis opposes the motion, arguing that Meadows was not acting in his official capacity when he engaged in the alleged wrongdoing.
Willis’ team argues that Meadows was part of a larger scheme to overturn the 2020 election results, and that even if some of his actions were technically within his job description, they were not done for any legitimate purpose.
Meadows’ attorneys argue that the state’s charges are not a “colorable federal defense,” meaning they are not strong enough to defeat the charges.
Legal experts say that Meadows is unlikely to succeed in moving his case to federal court.
