According to a well-known professor at New York University, former President Donald Trump is “mathematically likely” to be imprisoned due to the multiple criminal charges he is facing. Trump is currently facing four federal and state criminal indictments.
These bring the total number of charges against him to 91. These are the first criminal charges ever brought against a former president. The Department of Justice (DOJ) brought one case, while the Fulton County, Georgia, district attorney’s office brought the other.
Both cases involve Trump’s alleged attempts to challenge and overturn the results of the 2020 presidential nomination, following his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud leading to the election being stolen from him. The DOJ has charged Trump with keeping secret government documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, after leaving the White House in 2021 and not telling investigators about them.
As part of the years-long investigation into whether or not Trump paid adult film star Stormy Daniels hush money before the 2016 election, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with falsifying business records.
As the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024, Trump has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him and said that the investigations that led to the charges were attempts to hurt his political prospects.
